I received a complimentary copy of Easy Baking From Scratch from the publisher, Rock Ridge Press.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m not a big baker. Now… My mother! My mother was quite the baker! She could pull together a huge batch of dinner rolls that were amazingly tender and soft simply by the feel of the dough. Her pie crusts shattered like glass when you cut into one of her amazing fruit pies.
Me? Not so much.
Cooking is definitely more my thing and if I had my DNA tested, they’d probably tell me her baking talent trait skipped me. I was too busy as a kid to pay attention to what she was doing in the kitchen and now I regret it because she’s gone.
That is why I’m so happy to have discovered Easy Baking From Scratch, Quick Tutorials, Time-Saving Tips, Extraordinary Sweet and Savory Classics by Eileen Gray.
Eileen Gray is the creative genius behind the blog, Baking Sense, The Art and Science of Baking where she shares reliable, well-tested recipes for bakers of every skill level. She has a degree in pastry arts from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College and owned Cake Art Studio, an award-winning custom cake bakery.
Although baking is a science, Eileen believes it doesn’t have to be rocket science. In Easy Baking From Scratch, Eileen shares over 100 easy-to-follow recipes for both sweet and savory classics. Many of the recipes are for classics you want in your recipe repertoire such as the best carrot cake, the best pizza dough, flaky buttermilk biscuits, quick puff pastry and cinnamon rolls.
Each chapter of Easy Baking From Scratch starts with a quick tutorial on the chapter subject. For example, in the chapter on pies and tarts, Eileen discusses what the difference between pies, tarts and galettes are, provides helpful hints and time-saving tips and tricks to help sharpen your baking skills. Then, almost all of the recipes have a more specific tip to assure total baking success!
I haven’t put any of the recipes in Easy Baking From Scratch to the test yet, but I plan to! This is going to be a cookbook I reach for time and time again and perhaps I’ll turn out to have some baking chops just like my mother!
At $16.99, this is definitely a cookbook you want to add to your collection if you want to improve your baking skills. If you have a budding baker in your family, it will make a great gift this holiday season!
