How to Make Radish and Red Onion Salad:

Recipe Ingredients:

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions:

  • Radishes: This radish salad recipe uses standard “table” radishes. Try other types of radishes, like French breakfast radishes, which are milder and sweeter than common red radishes but still have a peppery, mustardy piquancy.
  • Red Onion: Also known as purple onions.
  • Dill: There’s no substitute for fresh dill! Fresh mint will also work in this radish salad recipe.
  • Lemon Juice: Like fresh dill, there’s no substitute for fresh lemon juice.
  • Dijon Mustard: You can’t go wrong with Grey Poupon, which is widely available in every supermarket. Grey Poupon originated in Dijon, France, in the 1800s. Although Kraft Heinz now owns it, it has authentic roots. Maille is also excellent and genuine, but it’s pricey.
  • Red Wine Vinegar: Red wine vinegar and lemon juice have two different flavor profiles. Although an acid, red wine vinegar adds depth to the bright acidity of lemon juice to keep the vinaigrette from tasting “one-note.”

Step-By-Step Instructions:

  • Gather and prep all the ingredients.
  • Combine the lemon juice, red wine vinegar, garlic, and Dijon mustard in a small bowl.
  • Drizzle in the olive oil, whisking constantly until combined and the vinaigrette is fully emulsified.
  • Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

Chef Tip:

  • Use feta cheese that’s still in block form. Although crumbled feta cheese will also work, it looks messy, and the smallest particles tend to dissolve into the acidic dressing.

Recipe FAQs:

Can you make a Radish and Red Onion Salad ahead of time?

This radish salad can be made to the point of adding the vinaigrette. Store the vegetables and the vinaigrette separately. The acidic dressing will soften the radishes substantially, reducing the crunch factor.

What other vegetables go well in a radish salad?

Cucumbers would work well in this salad, as would a handful of blanched green beans.
